Climate in Montenegro

Climate

Geographical position, the sea and the mountains helped create a very diverse climate in Montenegro. Therefore, there are more climate zones: Mediterranean in the south, the modified Mediterranean climate in the Skadar basin and the plains, moderate continental climate in the ravines and valleys and mountain climate in the nort part of country.

Coastal area - In the coastal area, from Herceg Novi in the west to the

mouth of the river Bojana in the east, the climate is Mediterranean. Central region of Montenegro is separated from this area by high mountain ranges of Orijen, Lovcen and Rumija, which rise steeply above the sea coast, up to the height of 1700 meters, thus preventing penetration of the Mediterranean climate in the continental part. In the coastal region the average temperature in July is between 25°C and 28°C. The summers are long and dry, and winters are short and mild. The average number of sunshine hours on the coast is 2500, and Ulcinj has 2700 hours of sunshine annually. Cold weather usually keeps around the coastal mountain ranges, with occasional sunny and warm days. The average annual temperature of the sea is 11°C. During the winter, the temperature on the sea surface is about 7°C. During the spring, the temperature is 18°C. During the summer months, the temperature of the sea is high about 22-25°C.

Mainland area - Central parts of the country are colder in winter and warmer in summer than the coastal part. In the area of Zeta and Bjelopavlići plain, temperature in July is around 26°C. The average temperature in January is 10°C, and in July around 27°C. Maximum temperature in summer reaches up to 40°C, and the minimum in winter - down to -10°C. The central part is open to the Adriatic Sea and thus exposed to the strong Mediterranean climate influence. The heat wave goes through the valley of the river Bojana, over Skadar lake and the river Moraca, so the warmest Montenegrin town is Podgorica, with an average temperature of 5°C in January, and average of about 26°C in July. In Podgorica, in the summer months, the temperature reaches 40°C.

Mountain area - Northern or mountain area is characterized by high karst mountains. This area begins north and east of the rivers Piva, Komarnica and Morača. The mountain peaks rise up to 2000 meters above sea level. In the area of high karst mountains, there is a variation in temperature. The climate is sub-alpine, with cold and snowy winters and moderate summer. On Durmitor mountain snow reaches five meters in height. In the northern parts of Montenegro, in the high mountains, snow lingers for several months. The highest winter temperature is around 3°C, and the minimum about -6°C. In the summer months, the temperature ranges from 9°C to 23°C. During the summer period, the number of sunshine hours is 270 per month.
