Trebinje
This excursion gives you the opportunity to visit Trebinje one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina - picturesque town in shade of plane tree, city of wine, poets, sunshine and monasteries. Located less then 40 km from Herceg Novi, it is a world of its own, completely different than the coastal area of Montenegro. Limestone hills, small fertile pockets of land following the river flows, flocks of sheep and goats grazing and endless fields of vineyards will capture your imagination instantaneously.
Excursion departs from your hotel by driving to Herceg Novi through Tivat and ferry across the bay. A short drive inland from Herceg Novi will take you across the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina and to the town of Trebinje. For start we would drive up to the top of the hill above Trebinje for great panoramic views and visit Orthodox monastery Herzegovinian Gracanica which standing at the top of the hill, a beautiful church that has been consecrated to the poet Jovan Ducic. Obeying his wish, expre-ssed in his will, the temple of the Mother of God was raised on the hill Crkvina. Jovan Ducic (1871-1943) died in the USA and his last wish was to be buried in Trebinje, on the top of the one of nearby hills wherefrom the whole city is seen, in the small church which had to be a small replica of the Gracanica monastery in Kosovo! We will continue our tour visiting the most interesting places, Old town of Trebinje and Arslanagica Bridge, which was built by Mehmed-pasa Sokolovic in 1574, during Ottoman Empire rule.
Through Trebinje runs the river Trebisnjica along which, about 4 km downstream of the town, Tvrdos monastery is situated, which was built by the Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena in the 4th century. Tvrdos was destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its centuries-long history and today produces the highest quality wines. Wine making tradition in Tvrdos goes back to the 15th century. Indeed, throughout the times monastery had to rely on wine sales to local population but over last decade Tvrdos wines made its way abroad. About 15 years ago, the monastery’s monks started a new tradition of taking care of the grapevine fields Trebinje’s and Popovo.
